Mr 75 aka GE. In his early teens, rapper GE won a coveted spot on radio station GLR's weekly rap competition. The prize, a five minute spot on the following weeks rap show. He teamed up with a local DJ (DJ Flipside), another local rapper (MC Terror) and formed the group Universal Sound specifically to create a tune to air on the five minute spot. Following the show, the group stayed together for a number of years. But despite the usual demo tape efforts and dubious offers of recording and publishing deals, the group eventually split in the mid nineties, the other two members gave up hip hop completely leaving GE to represent Universal Sound. After some years spent honing his production, DJ and rapping skills, Universal Sound was reborn. Now collaborating with the multi talented musician NBG, the group became a hip hop collective. With NBG, a production company named 75 productions was created with GE using the pseudonym Mr 75 for all production work. The production element and group name remains constant, but vocalists vary. For the duration of the project the vocalist is a member of Universal Sound, thus the choice of vocalist has a definite effect on the direction and genre of the tune although fundamentally the music is hip hop. Universal Sound released two singles on the self owned 75 recordings label in the nineties, neither was a huge success but the projects attracted the attention of a number of unsigned local rappers and vocalists. Working out of the self owned project studio named BKS, 75 productions has produced hip hop for over 15 unsigned artists in the last year alone, some are scheduled for release this year, some have been released, most notably Original One's "Check the O" and "YUBYG" singles. Mr 75 also produced the Original One entry for the 2002 BMG records Busta rhyme competition. The competition received thousands of entries throughout the UK and the Original One entry was one of six finalists. In 2001 Universal Sound released the "Soundalike EP" which received much initial acclaim (for example, Hip Hop Connection Magazine said "…Production, lyrics and vocal delivery are perfectly executed…" and went on to say "…a crew to watch…") but due to distribution and promotional issues the EP was eventually shelved after less than 100 copies were pressed. As a rapper and as Universal Sound, GE's vocals and DJ work can be found on the Original One EP 'Check the 0' and future Original One releases. |
